Research has proven that there are many links between poor oral health and diseases that affect the body. Although having poor oral health hasn’t been proven to cause heart disease, the bacteria that is present in gum disease is believed to increase the risk of developing heart disease. Additionally, having poor dental health can increase the risk of bacterial infection in the blood stream, which can then affect the heart valves. Taking all of these studies into consideration, there is a visible link between oral health and the heart.

Recently, a study has taken place with Plaque HD, a plaque identifying toothpaste, and the effects its usage has on body health. Plaque HD is the first toothpaste that contains properties to visibly identify plaque on teeth, therefore, making it more effective to remove the plaque while brushing. In the trial study, researchers assessed the levels found in each subject of a high sensitivity protein (hs-CPR). This protein is a marker for potential risks of heart attack and stroke. The results of the study found a statistically significant reduction in the presence of hs-CPR with the use of Plaque HD, as the toothpaste aids in improving oral health by reducing the amount of plaque on the teeth.

Plaque is the soft, sticky film that builds up on teeth. It contains millions of bacteria, and can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Again, this bacteria also correlates with a higher risk of heart disease. In order to reduce these risks, practicing good oral hygiene by removing plaque is crucial, whether by simply brushing and flossing regularly or with the aid of a plaque removing toothpaste.

As studies continue to take place on body and oral health, we at the OMS office will continue to be aware of these issues and will provide recommendations on how to maintain your health.
