Whether you have had a wisdom tooth removed or you need a tooth removed due to decay or fracture, we have few tips for smoothing out the process of recovery.

1. Rest and relax for the first 24 – 48 hours.

Do not do any strenuous activity or lift anything over 10 pounds. Straining or elevating your heart rate can cause more pain and bleeding. Allow your body the chance to put its energy into healing.

2. Keep the extraction site clean.

After 12 hours, you can begin gently rinsing your mouth with antimicrobial mouthwash or 1/2 tsp. salt in 8 oz. warm water. The key key to healing is to rinse and spit gently, so that blood clots and stitches are not disturbed.

3. Eat a diet of soft, healthy foods and snacks.

Again, you do not want to disturb the healing of the socket, so soft foods are important. Foods that are healthy will boost your immunity and help to prevent infection. Try yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, or scrambled eggs.

4. Minimize your pain.

Take pain medication as directed by your doctor. Pain can also be minimized by avoiding painful actions, like poking the wound with your tongue, spitting, or blowing your nose.

5. Stay hydrated.

Drinking plenty of water can help to flush out the toxins from any medication, and can help you feel refreshed as you heal.

We always want our patients to have a good experience. Please call at any time if you have questions or if you notice any signs of infections such as redness, swelling, or discomfort that persists after the first 72 hours.
