Platelet Rich Plasma is a substance often used in oral surgery because of its ability to help the body to heal faster. Platelets are colorless bodies that are naturally present within our blood that play a part in forming blood clots. They also contain proteins called Growth Factors that assist the body in repairing itself by stimulating other cells to regenerate new tissue.

The blood used in this procedure is taken from the patient’s own body.  A small sample is collected during a scheduled outpatient treatment.  From this blood sample, platelets are extracted which contain the growth factor.  Other advantages include:

  • Lower infection risk – the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is applied to the wound, actually sealing it away from infectious agents, lowering the risk of problems
  • Accelerated healing – the natural healing ability of PRP results in faster tissue regeneration, which also decreases the risk of later infections, complications and patient discomfort
  • Patient Comfort and Convenience – the amount of blood necessary from the patient is small, and can be collected during an outpatient procedure, and there is no risk of disease transmission since it comes from the patient’s own body

Platelet Rich Plasma can be utilized in many procedures, including bone grafting for implants, closure of cleft lip and palate, bone repair, sinus lifts, and repair of fistulas between the mouth and sinus cavity.
